Sofrimar was established in 1979 to harness the abundant supply of shellfish and whitefish landed at Kilmore Quay with a view to supplying key European markets, particularly France. The name itself is an acronym, standing for Societe France Irlande de Maree.
The company has continued to invest in its state of the art process facilities, in particular, its innovative lobster holding facility. This has allowed the company expand rapidly and it now supplies all the key European markets and is a major exporter to Korea.
The success of this has been acknowledged and has led to Sofrimar being awarded "Seafood Exporter of 2007" by the Irish Exporters Association - an award dedicated to "a wonderful example of an exceptional seafood company".
